Personal profile

Research interests

My main research interests are in Middle English Literature, specifically Chaucer and Gower, and the manuscripts and early printed books in which their texts survive. My thesis, entitled Bridging the Gaps: The Journey of Blank Spaces in Medieval Manuscripts from Scribe to Screen, examined blank spaces in two manuscripts: Glasgow University Library MS Hunter 7, containing John Gower's Confessio Amantis, and Glasgow University Library MS Hunter 409, containing the Middle English Romaunt of the Rose. I then followed these spaces through each of the printed editions of these texts and then into their digital editions. I found that blank spaces are valuable evidence for the use of manuscripts during and after their construction, and for the relationships between printed editions. I am also interested in the afterlives of manuscripts and early printed books, leading to my first publication Unbe-leaf-able; leaf books from California to St Andrews which discussed the role of book clubs in the biblioclasm of early printed books.
