Research overview

Paul Gorby recently completed a PhD in International Relations at the University of St Andrews. His project is titled ‘Policing and Vagrancy in International Political Theory’. His viva took place on 26th August with Dr Jeffrey Murer as internal examiner and Dr Ida Danewid (University of Sussex) as external examiner. He passed with no corrections.

The aim of Paul's thesis is to explore four key areas of contemporary international political thought – including governmentality, human rights, migration, and constituent power – using the interlinked concepts of police power and vagrancy. It argues that the absence of these concepts from international political theory has been a detriment to the field and centring them in theoretical analyses can significantly improve our understanding. Paul is currently in the process of turning his thesis into a book to be published with an academic press.

More broadly, Paul is interested in Continental and post-structuralist political thought, particularly that of figures such as Foucault, Agamben, Negri, Di Cesare, and Derrida. He has read widely in critical theory and the history of political thought, and is familiar with topics including the Black Radical Tradition, the politics of abolition, the politics of squatting, human rights, and migration.

Paul recieved his B.A. in History and Political Science from Trinity College Dublin and his MLitt in International Political Theory from University of St. Andrews.
