Research overview


Paul's research is principally concerned with collaborative, reflexive and relational processes of organising and learning. He also has related interests in how these processes apply to the conduct of research – in particular the role of reflexivity in such processes – and the practice of management education. 

Awards and recognition

His research programme has been recognised with six best paper awards and the British Academy of Management's Medal for Knowledge Development. His work features in leading international journals. He has also been invited to speak on themes such as collaboration, reflexivity and leadership development at UK and international universities such as:

In 2021, Paul was elected as a Fellow of the British Academy of Management in recognition of his contributions to research and leadership in the field.

Editorial and Learned Society Leadership Roles

Paul is Editor-in-Chief of Academy of Management Learning and Education, a former Associate Editor of Management Learning (and a current board member) and the Journal of Management Education. He is also an editorial board member of Organizational Research Methods. He was a co-guest-editor of a special edition (2015) of the Journal of Management Education on "Threshold Concepts" and a special edition (2018) on "Management Education in Turbulent Times".

In 2014 Paul was elected to the executive committee of the Academy of Management's Management Education and Development (MED) Division (which has approximately 2000 members), and in 2015 elected to a leadership role for the Division. In 2016 that role involved leading the professional development workshop agenda in order to develop a two-day programme. In 2017, Paul organised the scholarly conference programme for the division (19 multi-paper panels and 10 interdisciplinary symposia). From 2018 to 2019, he was the Division Chair.

Paul is also a former British Academy of Management Council member, with a particular focus on the Management Knowledge and Education portfolio to which he still contributes. In addition Paul has been an active member of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management, where his work was recognised with a best paper award and funding for pedagogic research.

Teaching activity


In terms of content, Paul's teaching experience covers a breadth of organisation studies themes and strategic management topics – connected through the use of critical approaches and reflective and reflexive practice – at undergraduate, postgraduate and post-experience (MBA and executive education) levels.

External examining

External examiner experience has included:

  • University of Maynooth Business School, quinquennial review of the whole School
  • University of Auckland Business School, focussing on BCom (hons) and MCom (hons) dissertations
  • Open University Business School, focussing on undergraduate leadership courses
  • University of Bedfordshire, for the professional doctorate in systemic practice.

External doctoral examinations have been completed for a number of institutions in the UK and Australia.

Leadership and development of teaching and learning

Over several years Paul has contributed to the leadership and development of approaches to teaching and learning through the organisation of professional development workshops. These have been delivered at the Academy of Management, British Academy of Management and Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management conferences. The central idea behind this body of work has been that research and teaching can not only be connected, but can support dialogue that is developmental in both directions. These workshops include:

The principal of dialogue between research and teaching and learning is also evident in his publications. For example, he has published articles in the Journal of Management Education and the Academy of Management Learning and Education journal which not only offer theoretical contributions to research debates but also offer insights for practice in teaching and learning. 


Paul Hibbert is Honorary Professor of Management at the University of St Andrews. He has contributed to leadership in the University as Head of School, Dean of Arts & Divinity and Vice-Principal for Education. He also contributes to inter-institutional leadership as Co-Director of the InGAME (Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise) research partnership. His research is principally concerned with collaborative, reflexive and relational processes of organising and learning.
