Overview

Paul’s research is principally focussed on reflexive practice within the broader context of processes of organizing, leading and learning. His work has been recognized by awards from the Academy of Management, the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management, and the British Academy of Management. His work is published in international journals such as Academy of Management Learning & Education, Journal of Management Education, Journal of Management Studies, Leadership Quarterly, Management Learning, Organizational Research Methods, and Organization Studies. His published books are How to be a Reflexive Researcher (2021), and Leader Work (2024).

Awards and recognition

His research programme has been recognised with six best paper awards and the British Academy of Management's Medal for Knowledge Development. His work features in leading international journals. He has also been invited to speak on themes such as reflexivity, reflexive practice and leadership at many UK and international universities.

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, the Chartered Management Institute, the British Academy of Management, and the Academy of Social Sciences.

Editorial Roles

Paul is co-Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Management and the former Editor-in-Chief of Academy of Management Learning and Education, a former Associate Editor of Management Learning (and a current board member) and the Journal of Management Education. He is also an editorial board member of Organizational Research Methods.

Focus

In terms of content, Paul's teaching experience covers a range of management and leadership themes, connected through the use of critical approaches and reflective and reflexive practice – at undergraduate, postgraduate and post-experience (MBA and executive education) levels.

Leadership and development of teaching and learning

Over several years Paul has contributed to the leadership and development of approaches to teaching and learning through the organisation of professional development workshops. These have been delivered at the Academy of Management, British Academy of Management and Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management conferences, as well as invited sessions at universities in the UK and overseas.

Biography

Paul Hibbert is Professor of Management at the University of St Andrews. He has contributed to leadership in the University as Head of School, Dean of Arts & Divinity and Vice-Principal for Education. He also contributes to inter-institutional leadership as Co-Director of the InGAME (Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise) research partnership. His research is principally concerned with reflexive practice within the broader context of processes of organizing, leading and learning.
