Research overview

Unlocking Earth’s volcanic record with novel computer vision approaches
The project focusses on automating the detection and classification of volcanic ash. We aim to achieve this by developing deep learning tools to automatically detect and classify volcanic ash using microscopic images, thus combining geochemical techniques and computer vision to accelerate tephrochronology.

Education/Academic qualification

Master in Science, Magma deformation in Chachahuén dyke, Argentina. I successfully analysed and interpreted the petrography of the rock samples using techniques such as TGA-DSC, FTIR, and microscopic petrology, focusing on the upwelling and transport mechanisms of magma in lateral plumbing systems. Research was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Hugh Tuffen, in collaboration with Dr. Steffi Burchardt and Tobias Schmiedel of Uppsala University, Sweden. Master in Science, Quaternary Geological Studies along Godavari River, In and Around Gangapur, Nashik District, Maharashtra I interpreted the sedimentology of Quaternary sections by building lithosections, leading to identification of Neo-tectonic activities in the area based on microfaults in the basalt samples. The purpose of this study was to supplement already existing vast archaeological data with petrographic, structural, and sedimentological data to understand depositional history of the major Quaternary units exposed in the area. Research was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Sudha Vaddadi (Geologist, formerly with Geological Survey of India), in collaboration with Dr. Sushma Deo and Dr. S. N.
