Personal profile

Research overview

I lead the Climate Dynamics Lab at the University of St Andrews. Our research addresses fundamental questions in atmospheric and climate dynamics, extreme temperatures, land-climate interactions, the water cycle and past & future climate change. Recently we have been working to understand how clouds and water vapour influence monsoons, the dynamics of the intertropical convergence zone, and why continents and oceans respond very differently to climate change. In our research we use a range of tools including theory, computational models of varying degree of complexity, and Earth-system observations. Academic/Professional Qualification

I am a climate scientist and Lecturer in the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow in the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Group at the University of Oxford. From 2017-2018 I was an independent Imperial College Research Fellow and from 2014-2017 I was a postdoctoral research at ETH Zürich working with Tapio Schneider.

I completed my PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where my advisor was Paul O'Gorman. I also hold a bachelor's degree in Physics from Trinity College Dublin and a master's degree in Mathematical Modelling & Scientific Computing from the University of Oxford.
