Research overview

I began my PhD in May 2024 supervised by Dr Valerie Wallace and Dr Malcolm Petrie. My research explores how petitions and petitioning facilitated popular political engagement and thereby influenced the development of the state and democratic participation in nineteenth-century New Zealand. My thesis presents a history of New Zealand democracy beyond the vote and party politics, revealing the issues of concern and political participation of a range of populations excluded from formal parliamentary representation.

Research interests

My general research interests include popular politics, protest, British colonialism and empire – with particular expertise in nineteenth-century settler colonialism and New Zealand history. I am also interested in the application of digital tools to historical research and public outreach.
