Personal profile

Biography

I joined St Andrews in March 2024 after the completion of my PhD at University of Liverpool where I also gained my BA and MRes qualifications. I'm originally from Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire - just an hour's drive from St Andrews along the A91.

Research interests

My PhD thesis, entitled ‘Dynamics of Domination? Rwandan Survivor-Witness Agency and Representation in Collaborative Testimonial Writing,’ examined the tripartite relationship between Rwandan survivor-witness, Western co-author, and publishing house in the production and publication processes of French-language collaborative testimonies.

My research interests include the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, testimonial literature, Belgian colonialism in Africa and its ongoing impact, publishing dynamics and marketing strategies in the French-speaking world, and bibliography in the context of works by authors from sub-Saharan Africa.

Research overview

I am currently working with Prof Nicki Hitchcott (University of St Andrews) and Dr Alice Karekezi (University of Rwanda) on the deportation of Métis children from Ruanda-Urundi carried out by the Belgian state in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A particular focal point of our research is uncovering the stories of the mothers of the stolen children.

Academic/Professional Qualification

I completed my PGCE (QTS) qualification at Edge Hill University in 2017.
