Research overview

Joel Gehrke specialises in the intellectual and literary history of education and civil rights, as well as contemporary US politics and foreign affairs. As a journalist based in Washington D.C. from 2011 to 2024, he covered a variety of beats for National Review and The Washington Examiner. As a foreign affairs reporter, he traveled with two Secretaries of State and on his own to cover conflicts and high-level diplomacy across Europe and the Indo-Pacific. In 2025, the National Endowment for Humanities awarded him a grant to support his ongoing research into the relationship between liberal education, religious liberty, and civil rights. He completed an MLitt from the University of St Andrews in 2025. He graduated from Hillsdale College (Mich.) in 2011.
