Personal profile

Biography

Dr Janis Petzinger is a researcher within the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy and Public Good (CSPPG) within the School of Management. Since 2018 she has explored the world of philanthropy, particularly trusts and foundations, dynamics of gift relationships, and normative ideologies in grantmaking. She works closely with practitioners to provide learning on equitable and effective philanthropy practices, particularly with her funders at The Rank Foundation.

She is currently working as a postdoctoral research fellow, pulling from theoretical contributions of her PhD thesis. In particular, she examines the practice of relational philanthropy, and how foundations move from positivist cost-effective ideology towards interpretive trust-based practices. She also explores French Pragmatic Sociology of Critique as a conceptual framework to theorize how values, networks, and critiques manifest in the grantmaking sector.
