Research overview

My research group works on developing new solid-state energy materials and technological solutions. Sustainability is one of the key guiding principles. Our current major interest is in utilising waste heat and thermal management.

We have a strong track record in developing materials for use in thermoelectric generators, up to prototype level devices. This has largely focused on Heusler materials, which have good thermoelectric performance, satisfy key engineering requirements and are based on abundant elements. In addition, they afford a wide range of functional properties, comprising classical semiconductors to novel topological materials.

A parallel activity is innovative work developing electrochemical systems for waste heat harvesting, linked to the utilisation of the ionic Seebeck effect. This had led to an emerging interest in ionic conductors and electrode materials, which also form the working components of solid-state batteries.
