Research overview
My research focuses on the practice and performance of academic (e)valuation, with a particular focus on research: how and why is some research - and some individuals - deemed to be more 'excellent' than others? My specific focus is on the period of UK university expansion (1960s-1990s), immediately prior to the introduction of the Research Assessment Exercise. Although my work addresses the university sector at large, I have a particular interest in geography as a disciplinary case study where these issues were negotiated.
My work is at the intersection of:
- Intellectual History
- Sociology of Intellectuals/Academics
- History and Sociology of Science/Knowledge
- Sociology of Valuation
- Sociology of Professions
