Research overview

Francesco is a Global PhD student supervised jointly by Prof Laura Moretti and Dr Elsje van Kessel at the University of St Andrews, as well as Prof Roland Kanz at the University of Bonn. He studies copies of seventeenth-century Bolognese paintings across different media and geographies.

Before starting his PhD at the University of St Andrews / University of Bonn, Francesco completed a Master of Arts (Honours) in Art History at the University of St Andrews and the MA in Art History, Curatorship and Renaissance Culture at the Warburg Institute (School of Advanced Study, University of London).

Painting in Bologna and the Italian Peninsula 1600-1650; mystical visions in art of the Counter-Reformation; miraculous images in early modern Europe; Spanish polychrome sculpture (17th century); ivory sculpture (17th/18th centuries); copying and imitating; intercultural exchange
