Ernest Zhanaev, a doctoral student at the School of International Relations, University of St Andrews. A consultant for international organisations and think tanks Ernest researches human rights issues in post-Soviet countries specialising in online activism, security studies, and social and political development. Ernest Zhanaev was instrumental in making the Kyrgyzstan parliament adopt the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture and latterly to pass legislation for greater financial transparency in electoral law. The most recent academic degree is a Master of Letters in Middle Eastern, Caucasian, and Central Asian Studies gained at the University of St Andrews.
The current research focuses on online social mobilisation, digital activism, and digital authoritarianism. Other academic interests include security studies and Central Asia.
