Research overview

Translation in the Middle Ages as a cultural and linguistic phenomenon; the emergence of vernaculars; creation of literacy.

Research interests

Translation in the Middle Ages as a cultural and linguistic phenomenon; historical linguistics studied in parallel with cultural change, as evidenced in the emergence of vernaculars and the creation of literacy.  These two prime interests are pursued through studying vernacular texts and the continuing role of Latin in Medieval France.

Other expertise

Contemporary sociolinguistics; Old and Middle French literature; corpus linguistics.

Future research

Two completed book chapters on the medieval French Bibles should appear in 2009 or 2010, and a book on the history of Biblical translation in Medieval France should appear in 2010 or 2011.  Future publications will include my work on the Origins of the Glossed French Prose Apocalypse, a phraseological study of some Christian Latin inscriptions, and in the longer term a critical edition of the Old French Bible.

Academic/Professional Qualification

BA, Modern Languages (French & German), University of Oxford; DPhil, University of Oxford
