Research overview

Clara Défachel is a second-year PhD candidate in Comparative Literature at the University of St Andrews, where she works under the supervision of Prof Nicki Hitchcott with co-supervision at the University of Stirling (Dr Aedín Ní Loingsigh) and the University of Aberdeen (Prof Nadia Kiwan).

Her doctoral research combines comparative literature, translation studies, and cultural policy research to explore literary translations from Arabic into French produced in France, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia in the past decade. She is especially interested in French cultural diplomacy's current interest in promoting such translations, in the linguistic and editorial norms of the global publishing industry in French, and on the overall impact these might have on literary translation as a creative process in the Maghreb.

Clara's research is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council through a SGSAH-DTP Studentship.
