Research overview
Charles Warren's current research interests lie within the broad field of environmental management, with an emphasis on Scotland. In 2024, he published a third edition of his book 'Managing Scotland's Environment' (EUP). More specifically, his research interests include:
1. Environmental policy debates in Scotland, including the sustainability of upland estates, the conversion of farmland to grow energy crops, and the management of lowland & peri-urban deer.
2. Social dimensions of the energy transition, including public attitudes towards renewable energy technologies and the role of community energy.
3. Proposals for 'rewilding' and the reintroduction of lost species.
4. Debates surrounding the conservation management of alien and native species.
His h-index is currently 40. He has almost 7300 career citations, including 20 publications with over 100 citations and three with over 850 citations.

At present, my research activities have necessarily been scaled back while I am seconded to the Proctor's Office, serving as Associate Provost (Students).

Teaching activity
While I am serving as Associate Provost (Students), my teaching duties have been greatly reduced, but I still contribute material on environmental management at undergraduate and Masters levels, and I coordinate and lead the William & Mary Summer School each year.
