Prior to becoming an Associate Lecturer at St Andrews, Caitlin Flynn was an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin (2017-19).

Dr Flynn's primary research interests include: gender and sexuality, narratology and storytelling, humanism, and humour in Older Scots and Middle English poetry. 

Her first book, The narrative grotesque in medieval Scottish poetry, was released by Manchester University Press in 2022.

Research interests

Dr Flynn’s research interests are primarily in Older Scots, Middle English, and Middle High German literature. Of special interest are medieval storytelling, narratology and poetics, as well as medieval gender studies and critical race studies.

Whilst an Alexander-von-Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin, she conducted and published research on gender, sexuality, and humour in Older Scots and Middle High German poetry. Her monograph, The narrative grotesque in medieval Scottish poetry (Manchester University Press, 2022), introduces a new critical framework in order to make sense of medieval texts which are weird and wonderful literary hybrids.
