His research interests include: aesthetics, especially its relation to ethics; the philosophy of creativity; the philosophy of film and film theory; philosophy for children; and moral theory.

He is a past President of the British Society of Aesthetics and an Editorial Consultant to The British Journal of Aesthetics. He has held several research awards, including most recently a two-year Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship.

He the author of two monographs, Art, Emotion and Ethics (Oxford University Press, 2007) and A Philosophy of Cinematic Art (Cambridge University Press, 2010). He is currently working on a new monograph on creativity.
