Research overview

Aristidis (Aris) V. Agoglossakis Foley is a PhD candidate and Graduate Teaching Assistant in International Relations at the University of St Andrews. His doctoral research adopts an interdisciplinary approach to explore the connections between dystopian literature and political theory, aiming to construct Critical Dystopianism. Drawing from political theory and dystopian thought, it is a critical and analytical tool of contemporary socio-political norms, practices, and events.
Aris' further research interest include:
• Conceptions of power, especially through works of Michel Foucault and Antonio Gramsci
• Ecological political thought and its links to dystopian literature
• Technological innovation
• Wider African political thought
• Non-Western dystopian fiction
Additionally, Aris has tutored in the School of International Relations since 2020. Ranging from sub-honours to honours modules, he has taught on IR theory, Foreign Policy, Dissertation Writing, and contributed to the Speculative Fiction and IR honours module. In addition, he has led numerous workshops on essay writing for undergraduate students.
Aris holds an MLitt in International Political Theory from the University of St Andrews and a BA in Writing and English Literature from Anglia Ruskin University. He has also held an Assistant Warden Scholarship position throughout his PhD and has worked as a research assistant on the ethics of security and ontological security.
