Research overview

My research is in physics education. My main interests focus on the research-based development of interactive simulations and activities for the learning and teaching of quantum mechanics. I lead the St Andrews Quantum Mechanics Visualization project (QuVis, www.st-andrews.ac.uk/physics/quvis), and developed simulations and accompanying activities for the Institute of Physics Quantum Physics resources (http://quantumphysics.iop.org). Research interests include representational learning and the development of representational competence, how different visualizations influence students’ models of physical situations, the teaching of interpretive and conceptual aspects of quantum mechanics, research-based resource development for student difficulties in quantum mechanics and optimizing simulations and activities to promote engaged exploration and learning. I am also interested in student-generated content in quantum mechanics courses, in particular using Peerwise.
