Personal profile
Research overview
Andrew is a SCREDS Clinical Lecturer & Specialty Registrar in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. His academic work is dominated by collaborative data-driven research at the intersection between T&O, allied specialties (including Sport & Exercise Medicine and Medicine for the Elderly), and digital health. Clinically, his orthopaedic interests are lower limb joint preservation and replacement, trauma and sports orthopaedics, and his work aims to develop and evaluate new techniques in arthroscopy, robot-assisted surgery, and patient-centred interventions to improve outcomes in patients requiring surgery.
He is Deputy Chair of the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit Research Group, and is completing a PhD in T&O which involved establishing and leading the International Multicentre Project for Auditing COVID-19 in T&O (IMPACT). He is a co-founder of the Scottish Collaborative Orthopaedic Trainees Research Network (SCOTnet), and is coordinating the development of the a research network linking Scotland’s National Treatment Centres: the Scottish Centres for Orthopaedic Treatment & Innovation in Surgery & Health (SCOTTISH) Network.
A strong advocate for physical activity and sport, Andrew is pursuing dual-training as a physician in Sport & Exercise Medicine (SEM) and works in elite performance environments as Club Doctor for Heart of Midlothian FC, and as part of the matchday medical teams for Glasgow Warriors and the Scotland Rugby international teams. This practice informs his work around optimisation of pathways and a holistic approach to patient care, and is especially useful when applied to the context of frailty, multimorbidity, and relative inactivity.
Andrew is a keen educator and has achieved postgraduate qualifications in medical education. He has experience in curriculum design and delivery for undergradaute and postgraduates trainees in medicine and surgery and has published articles on innovations in surgical training. He is a mentor for doctors in training and co-authored a book on surgical careers titled The Surgical Portfolio & Interview: A Complete Guide, and he is an examiner for the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (FSEM).
