Narrative

The focus of the EU-LAC-MUSEUMS project is to follow the EU-CELAC Action Plan (2013-15) in carrying out a comparative analysis of small to medium-sized rural museums and their communities in the EU and LAC regions, and to develop associated history and theory.
The project has been designed with a bottom-up approach to impact upon the lives of museum communities in remote regions of each country in both the developed and the developing world.
• Professional evaluations of an international touring exhibition on Caribbean art and Migration, co-curated by staff in the University of the West Indies and USTAN, together with tourism data, including audience figures and visitor numbers at exhibitions, events, performances.
• Enhancing public understanding of the major issues and challenges facing small, local museums and their communities today, through a Gold access Web Portal hosting all research outputs, audio and video content of the project.
• The imaginations and sensibilities of individuals and groups will be expanded through 3D workshops of museum objects (“community icons”), facilitated by USTAN Open Virtual Worlds.
• The potential to develop curriculum in Museum Studies beyond the submitting HEI, through developments in new museology for social action (peer reviewed publications and online resources created).
• Potential for influence on debate in public policy and practice of museums through membership of and distinctive contributions to expert panels and policy committees in the International Council of Museums (ICOM), especially their Regional Alliances ICOM Europe and ICOM LAC. Through ICOM, the project news will reach the 35,000 members and museum professionals in 136 countries and territories who represent the global museum community.
