Research dissemination and information sharing event for Arnol community

Impact: Environmental Impact, Social Impact, Public Discourse Impact

Description of impact

We shared information on funding models and their associated characteristics and risks, for peatland restoration in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, to an audience of approx. 5 people from the community of Arnol and the surrounding area, on the island of Lewis.

Who is affected

Members of the Arnol Estate and surrounding area, in Lewis, Outer Hebrides, who manage peatland areas (i.e., through sheep grazing or peat cutting) within their Common Grazings.

Narrative

Research Assistant, Ewan Jenkins, spent approximately six weeks interviewing members of the Carloway and adjacent communities in Lewis, across February and March of 2023. Members of the project team, led by Ewan Jenkins, travelled to Lewis in June of 2023 to share some of the key findings from the research with the main communities involved. Key findings from the project illustrated to us that communities were lacking information on the potential sources of funding, and risks associated with the funding, for the restoration of peatlands under their management. Therefore, we held two free events, 'Peatland Restoration Talks', for community members to share information about funding opportunities for peatland restoration, associated risks and tried to address some of the concerns they shared during the research phase of the project.
