This dataset supports a scoping review of research on location-based games for language learning, covering studies published between July 2016 and July 2024. The data were collected through a systematic search of academic databases using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The dataset is presented in two Excel files:
File 1: Appendix A – Coding Scheme
Contains extracted data from the 19 studies included in the final review. Each study is coded across multiple variables, including publication details, methodology, research focus, theoretical frameworks, intervention types, context, results, and implications. It provides a structured overview of how location-based games are being researched in the field of language education.
File name: Appendix_A_Coding_Scheme.xlsx
File type: Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (.xlsx)
Contents: Sheet 1: One row per study, with columns for Author(s), Year, Source, Title, Target Language, Research Focus, Methodology, Theoretical Framework, Intervention Type, Context, Summary, Results and Implications.
Software required: Any spreadsheet application such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice Calc.
File 2: Appendix B – Search Log
Documents the full journal search process undertaken during the initial phases of the review. It includes several sheets detailing database-specific searches, keywords used and the number of results retrieved and screened.
File name: Appendix B Search Log.xlsx
File type: Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (.xlsx)
Contents: Sheet 1: Database search strategy, Sheet 2: Screening log, Sheet 3: Exclusion reasons
Software required: Microsoft Excel or compatible software
These files provide transparency into the review’s methodology and facilitate reproducibility. The coding scheme may be useful for researchers conducting similar reviews or for comparative analysis in digital game-based learning research.
