Description
This spreadsheet contains geo-coded lists of the learned institutions that were entitled to receive gratis copies of the Royal Society's publications (the Philosophical Transactions, and the Proceedings). It illuminates the international circulation of the Society's scientific journals in the period when philanthropic / non-commercial circulation was more important than sales/subscriptions.The sources of these lists of institutions are explained on the README tab at the start of the file. These lists were imported into QGIS to produce the maps published in Fyfe et al (2022), A History of Scientific Journals: publishing at the Royal Society 1665-2015. Statistical analysis of these lists (see the GRAPHS tab) underpins the analysis of the Royal Society's philanthropic circulation as published in Fyfe et al (2022) and also in Fyfe (2023?), 'The geography and politics of the Royal Society’s approach to circulating scientific journals, c.1760-1930'
