On 13 March, a delegation from the Creating Synergies between Indigenous Practices and Scientific Knowledge (ISIPSK) research project, locally dubbed 'Sankofa', paid a working visit to Ghana's Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Emelia Arthur. The delegation was led by Dr Ifesinachi Okafor-Yarwood, the project lead from the University of St Andrews and accompanied by representatives from local research collaborators - Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG) and the Fisheries Commission of Ghana.
During the meeting, the Hon. Minister was briefed on the progress of the research project and preliminary ideas from the project's fieldwork, drawn from the four coastal regions of Ghana were shared. Among salient discussions, the relevance of indigenous practices to marine conservation & the potential of traditional ecological knowledge to strengthen fisheries management and support sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities were highlighted.
