On Wednesday, 27 August 2025, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, received Dr. Ifesinachi Okafor-Yarwood, Project Lead of the Creating Synergies between Indigenous Practices and Scientific Knowledge (ISIPSK), popularly known as the Sankofa Project, at the Naval Headquarters in Accra.

Dr. Okafor-Yarwood, a researcher from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, introduced the project’s core mission: to promote sustainable fisheries management by harmonising indigenous ecological knowledge with scientific research. The initiative, which engages fishing communities across Ghana’s coastal regions, seeks to foster inclusive, locally grounded approaches to marine conservation and livelihood.
