Inside Versailles

Press/Media: Relating to Research

Description

'Inside Versailles' is a series of short (5 minute) programmes that follow on from each episode of the major Canal+ television drama series, broadcast by the BBC in spring 2016 & spring 2017. I was the expert guest discussant for episode 7 of series 2 on the subject of the antagonism of France and the Dutch Republic and the related rivalry between Louis XIV of France and William III, Prince of Orange. The aim of this series of shorts is to provide background understanding - and some factual corrections - on the material treated in each episode of the main drama series for the benefit of the general public.

DescriptionBased upon my knowledge and understanding acquired directly from research upon Louis XIV's France and international relations between 1610 and 1789, on which I have written three books and a number of learned and popular articles, I was invited by the BBC to appear as a guest expert on one of their short programmes 'Inside Versailles'. This involved flying to London to be filmed on 14th March 2017, appearing with Greg Jenner and Prof Kate Williams (University of Reading), the presenters and interviewers. Approximately 30 minutes of usable film was shot, and this was then edited down to produce the best effect in the 5 minutes available for educating the general public on the back story to the French invasion of the Dutch Republic in 1672. The programme was broadcast on 2nd June 2017 and I have had a number of complimentary communications from members of the general public about the clarity of my explanation of the issues.
