You Care About Yiddish Children’s Literature More Than You Think
A rabbi rides across the desert on a lion’s back; a winter wind throws a tantrum that takes the form of a blizzard; a gaggle of chickens on a New Jersey poultry farm resolves to learn Yiddish. This talk has twin aims: to describe the idea ecosystem of Yiddish children’s literature and explain what it reveals about Jewish modernity as well as to explore the relationship between literary translation and critical scholarship. Udel is the editor and translator of Honey on the Page: A Treasury of Yiddish Children’s Literature (NYU Press, 2020), Never Better!: The Modern Jewish Picaresque (University of Michigan Press, 2017), and Umbrella Sky: Children’s Literature and Modern Jewish Worldmaking, forthcoming from Princeton University Press in 2025.
