Conventional online learning environments have a set of well understood roles and privileges which support the secure creation and submission of credit bearing learner's coursework. The emergence of open source virtual worlds for open learning shows great potential for developing a new, engaging approach to the creation of immersive, collaborative learning environments. These allow for the dynamic creation of content and for that content to be programmed. They empower students to explore environments that would be inaccessible to them in the real world. Learners achieve presence through the proxies of avatars, and consequently are aware of and may interact with fellow learners within the virtual environment. Interactivity ranges from simple exhibits as might be found in a museum to configurable, complex simulations controlled and visualized in a 3D space. Virtual worlds do not however incorporate the familiar educational roles, privileges and permissions that are needed for secure coursework management and this necessarily inhibits their use for anything more than auxiliary, fringe learning activities. This talk will illustrate the potential of virtual worlds for education from case studies, and identify and explain the shortcomings with existing security models before outlining the requirements on those systems and describing recent developments in addressing the challenges which arise.
