“[To] Be Taught Not by Angels, but By Men”: Education in Early Modern Scotland Following the Reformation.

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

This presentation discussed the influence of the Scottish reformers on education and their goals for the grammar schools of the realm in educating the population. The key Reformation tenant of Sola Scriptura presented an intrinsic mandate on the reformers to have the general population reading and studying Scripture. As such a school system designed to instill literacy became crucial. From this initial development, grew the grammar school system of the early modern period that would be crucial for the creation of a largely literate and educated population found in Scotland and England in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Join us for an introduction into the topic of education in early modern Scotland.
