In the 110th anniversary year of the Battle of the Somme - and also only a couple of days after another anniversary, the loss of Lord Kitchener aboard HMS Hampshire off the Orkney Islands on 5th June 1916 - Dr Derek Patrick will make his first visit to the Branch.
Derek's talk will explore the formation of the 8th, 9th and 10th (Service) battalions of The Black Watch and the men who served in New Army units of the regiment. Based on contemporary records he will discuss the geographic spread of recruiting, the origins of the volunteers, and how each battalion was officered and led. Derek will explain how regimental identity helped forge these battalions into effective units, and how they performed in the early stages of the war. Finally, he will look at the experiences of soldiers who were later discharged as physically unfit etc
Dr Derek Patrick is a lecturer in History at the University of St Andrews. He has a long-term interest in the Great War going back to his childhood, when he discovered his great grandfather was killed in action on the Somme in 1916 while serving with The Black Watch.
Derek was a co-founder of the Great War Dundee Commemorative Project, and was one of three Scottish academic advisers for the BBC's 'World War One at Home' initiative
