The Use, Misuse and Abuse of Science in Advertising (Retirement is Opportunity)

  • Robert Mark Hagan (Speaker)

Activity: Talk or presentation typesPublic lecture/debate/seminar

Description

Science is better than sex, at least when it comes to advertising. Science can be a powerful tool when it comes to selling your product. Advertising will encourage you to buy chocolate, cheese and wine because they are good for you; that a new, more expensive face cream is better than all the others; that fish oil pills will make your children cleverer; that 'detox' actually has any meaning in advertising and many other untruths. In this talk we will explore what the science actually says about these products, how long it has been going on for and what (if anything) we can do about it. We will also look into the history of advertising scams, the scientific terminology that is used to describe them and how scientists control real experiments to make sure that the affect they are measuring is caused by the thing they are testing.
