Description
Al-Walīd Ibn Yazīd (709–744), the short-lived Umayyad caliph was an acclaimed poet and musician. His artistic creativity as well as his eccentric lifestyle and provocative attitude towards religious and social norms and values have been drawing attention of historians and literary scholars. My talk will evaluate methodological approaches to the study of al-Walīd’s life and works in European scholarship. In addition, religious views and ethical aspects expressed in his poetic texts will be discussed in detail in the context of the Umayyad cultural history.
