Description

Films often provide a unique sense of a place, unavailable through other media. The relationship between cinema and the place can be examined in numerous ways. On one hand, film provides an urban archive that maps changes in the urban landscape; and on the other, film does not only capture the atmosphere of a place but it produces the place, both literally and imaginarily through the construction of fantasy urban spaces, ideas and ideals of that place.

Forough Farrokhzad in early 1960s was commissioned to make a documentary to raise awareness about a leper colony in the northwest of Iran. The House is Black is a timeless film not only because it is a reportage of life at the leper colony, but also because throughout this short film she has transcended their life in the colony to represent life in general. Reading this film like her poetry this paper will explore the ways in which she uses visual imagery and cinematic techniques to move beyond visual impressions and discuss how masterfully she has managed to redefine the sense of space in this leper colony
