The Dante Debate - Part 2Co-organised with Dr Robert Wilson (St Andrews). This is a series of public debates focusing on Dante and the relationship of his texts to contemporary society. Presented by the Lectura Dantis Andreapolitana (LDA), in collaboration with Sacro (a Community Justice Voluntary Organisation), The Howard League for Penal Reform and Glasgow Life.
The second LDA Dante Debate, at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow, discussed repentance and forgiveness, taking Dante’s 'Purgatorio' as the starting point for comparison with and discussion of our views today. The panel:
-John Haldane, Professor of Philosophy, Director of the Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs at the University of St Andrews.
-Marina Shaw, Project Manager of Families Affected by Parental Imprisonment Team at Circle, Board member of The Howard League for Penal Reform Scotland.
-David Sinclair, Head of Communications & Fundraising for Victim Support Scotland, previously a national newspaper journalist.
-Robert Wilson, Lecturer in Italian at the University of St Andrews, co-organiser of the Lectura Dantis Andreapolitana, researches and teaches on Dante.
Each member of the panel presented a particular perspective on sin and repentance, punishment and forgiveness, moral reform and redemption, based on their particular expertise, knowledge and/or experience. Then the floor opened to the public for any questions, views, or observations.
