Postdoctoral research associates Dr Diane Munday and Dr Marie Yang and PhD student Nicola Beesley have each produced creative graphic pieces based on their own research as part of the University's Histories, Languages and Cultures (HLC) Art Exhibition.
The exhibition is a growing venture presenting exhibitions that raise awareness of emerging artists and new innovative approaches.
Designer Virus Diane works in our Respiratory and Emerging Viruses Group and studies Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HRSV). She has used fluorescent microscope images of virus-infected lung cells and turned them into a textile design, taking inspiration from famous artists and vintage trends. Diane said: "As part of my research I do a lot of confocal microscopy to visualise HRSV. The images themselves are often very striking and I have always thought they could be applied to something other than just my job! With help from family and friends I came up with the idea of applying some of the pictures to design and fashion and I’m really pleased with how they turned out.”
