Taught field work in an undergraduate geography programme : from benchmarking to developing student research projects

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

A new Subject Benchmark Statement for Geography was published in 2022 by the Quality Assurance Agency, the latest edition of the original 2000 Statement that helped define what undergraduate geography education is in the context of the UK higher education system. Field work is particularly highlighted - both as an essential skill for students, and as a unique characteristic in the subject of geography. This talk will highlight some of my experience being involved in the design and implementation of a physical geography field and lab programme for undergraduates in the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews in response to the Statement, as well as some of the field based student research projects I have supervised previously in Hong Kong, as a means to reflect on what teaching field work may mean in geography education at the undergraduate level.
