The largest conference of the Swedish historical community which meets only every three years.
British Economic and Military Impact on Sweden in the Seventeenth Century
This panel considers the recent and on-going work conducted by a number of scholars which details the arrival and impact of Britons in Sweden in the long seventeenth century. Importantly it will diverge from the usual bi-lateral ethnic migration studies that look only to a particular grouping from the British Isles (English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish) to show that when these migrants coalesced around Swedish population centres were often driven rather by motives of commercial, political and religious interest. This does not mean that there were not significant ethnic clusters. Nevertheless, focus on these can often obscure the more interesting relationships which impacted upon the noted spheres within Sweden and her territorial interests in Europe and beyond. These included the network development, community building and inter-marriage both within the British diaspora, but also across the artificial boundaries often imposed on other migrant groups and the indigenous Swedish population.
