Description

It is Winter is Rafi Pitts’s third feature film. Made in 2008, the film is a free adaptation of the novel, Safar (The Journey, 1972), by the Iranian novelist, Mahmood Dowlatabadi. Pitts’s visually stunning film uses Persian music and poetry beautifully to tell a tale set in a small town in Iran. A man who has recently lost his job travels across the border in search for work. When he does not return after a few months he is presumed dead. His young and attractive wife then becomes the subject of pursuit by a carefree newcomer to town....

While the film is similar in style to much of what we have seen in Iranian films in recent years, it offers its own unique qualities, some of which are rooted in Pitts's creative use of other Iranian art forms.
