Description

A commemoration of the amazing life and oeuvre of Japan’s most admired and universally adored actress, who left us in 2015.
We screenied one of Hara’s earliest films, the German-Japanese co-production THE NEW EARTH (a.k.a. The Daughter of the Samurai/Atarashiki Tsuchi/新しき土) 1937, directed by Arnold Frank and Mansaku Itami.

Scholarly contributions by historian Konrad Lawson and Film Studies scholar Philippa Lovatt (St Andrews), as well as commentary by Alistair Phillips (Warwick) on Tokyo Story, Bruce Chu (Communication University of China) on Hara’s films with Ozu, by Alex Zahlten (Harvard) and Joel Neville Anderson (Rochester/Japan Cuts), and Jennifer Coates on Hara’s image in gossip media (Kyoto U.).
