Description

SELF project (2012-15): Assessing the Diverse Background and Needs of 'Advanced' Latin Language Students. Organisers: Emma Buckley and Alice Koenig. Graduate Research Assistant: Ana Kotarcic

Students are arriving to study ‘Advanced’ Latin at St Andrews with increasingly diverse linguistic backgrounds. Differences between the content and standard of Highers Latin, A-level Latin and other qualifications mean that there is great variation in students’ experience, knowledge and skills, and some (in particular, Highers students) struggle with the linguistic challenges of many of our modules.
This project aims to enhance the language learning experience of all Latin students, whatever their background, by re-evaluating their respective needs. The knowledge we gain will be useful for other universities with similar demographics, especially within the Scottish Higher Education sector.
