Russian and Slavic Studies in the West

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

Why are students of Slavic studies pressured to learn Russian first before allowing them to focus on other Slavic languages. In comparison, in departments of Germanic languages, neither English nor German constitutes such a compulsory gatekeeper to the study of other Germanic languages and cultures. A student, for example, can immediately focus on Swedish or Dutch language and culture.
