Description
The British School at Rome and Università’ La Sapienza, Rome will host a workshop, co-organised by Valentina Arena (UCL), Giorgio Piras (La Sapienza, Rome), and Christopher Smith (BSR), that aims to explore the role played by later imperial authors to reconstruct the work of Varro; politician, general, and great intellectual of the late Roman Republic.With the exception of the res rustica, no other work of Varro’s copious production has survived intact (even of the de lingua Latina only nearly six of the twenty-five books have survived). It follows that to investigate this chapter of the intellectual history of the late Republic it is essential to consider the work of those ancient authorities who preserved Varro’s fragments. This builds on the strong methodological foundations laid down in the Fragmentary Roman Historians and Fragmentary Roman Orators projects as well as on a successful workshop in London in January 2015.
This workshop will focus on the citing practice of these authorities. Structured around the study of the most significant witnesses of Varro’s antiquarian work, treated individually, the workshop will take the shape of a series of sessions led by a designated scholar, who, after an introductory paper, will lead a discussion on pre-circulated passages that demonstrate the citing practices of the author in question.
One of the objectives of the workshop will be to prepare the ground for a new extended collaborative research project, which will focus on Roman antiquarian works, giving centrality to Varro within this tradition.
