Reading duritia in Vergil: Primitivity and Narrative Contestation in Aeneid 6-9

Activity: Talk or presentation typesPresentation

Description

This paper considers Vergil's representation of duritia in the Aeneid from a narratological perspective. With a key focus on the recurrence of duritia in different books and various visions of primitivity that it is associated with, this paper examines how Vergil's understanding of duritia is indebted to different ancient traditions of thoughts and ideas.
Different versions of this paper are presented at the ICS PG WiP Seminars (London, Nov 2024) and the Fons conference in Cambridge (Nov 2025).
