Description

In culmination work done during a Museum Education internship at King Manor Museum, an event in their Hands on History series was held called Queer Pride & Possibility. This event centred around research I undertook based off Margaret Middleton's "Looking for Queer Possibility in the Museum", history of LGBTQ+ experience in nineteenth century America and archival-based inquiry. This was presented through a hands-on display of a lovers-keepsake box, informational pamphlet "Romantic Friendships of the Nineteenth Century", and guided tour by myself on the research and legacy. Additionally, I led an exploration of queer floriography and event creating salt dough ornaments. In the end, visitors were asked if they thought it was possible for queer experience to take place at King Manor based off the history shared and Middleton's booklet.

The display was available for June 2023, and the pamphlet "Romantic Friendships of the Nineteenth Century" has been been accessible for 3 years now at the the King Manor Museum during regular hours as well as educational events in local community and tabling events. Particular prominence is placed on it during Pride month in NYC, and interest/printed copies handed out via LGBTQ networks in the state and the NYC Museum Educators Roundtable (NYCMER). Thank you for your support!
