Public lecture delivered at the conference in Venice (February 11-12, 2011) on the safeguarding of the cultural and linguistic heritage of Venice and the Veneto: 'Il veneto: tradizione, tutela, continuita'' (sponsored by UNESCO and the Veneto Region). My paper, which will be published in the proceedings of the conference, focused the nature of early Venetian borrowings in English in the works of John Florio, Ben Jonson and Thomas Coryate.
