Description

Emma Cameron led a Polar Science day with children’s charity the Polar Academy, with the help of TJ Young, Tom Cowton, Ryan Strickland, and Lucy Robinson. The day was funded by the SAGES Small Grants Scheme, and involved 25 students from Dalkeith High School (Edinburgh) and Park Mains High School (Glasgow). In the morning, the students participated in “Polar Fieldwork Training” at East Sands beach, deploying scientific equipment (a CTD borrowed from the Scottish Association of Marine Science and weather stations borrowed from the Royal Meteorological Society) at the harbour. In addition to the science, students also practiced putting up their tents and lighting their stoves in preparation for their upcoming expedition to Greenland in March. In the afternoon, the students came to Irvine for a series of workshops, and learned about the global energy budget, ocean and atmospheric circulation and how to track weather fronts and predict stormy weather in the field. Lauren Henderson from the University Admissions team closed off the afternoon by talking the students through university access schemes across Scotland. It was a great day and the glaciology group is looking forward to welcoming the students back in June to review the findings from their science project in Greenland!
