Description

Emma Cameron and Martim Mas e Braga were in Dundee on Wednesday running fieldwork training for the Polar Academy – a charity that offers high school pupils who have faced difficulties in life (such as bereavement, bullying, or difficult home circumstances) the chance to take part in a year-long training program that culminates in a 2-week expedition in Greenland. Students develop their teamwork and leadership skills over the course of the expedition, and conduct some science experiments, which have been designed by Tom Cowton and TJ Young. The students learned how to cast a CTD by testing it out in the River Tay, getting vertical profiles of the river's temperature and salinity just next to Dundee's V&A. This will prepare them for repeating the experiment in Greenland’s Sermilik and Tasiilaq Fjords at the end of July, where they will measure differences in water properties close to the glaciers and far away from them.
