Description
Wikipedia is the world’s largest encyclopaedia and is constantly evolving. However, there are significant knowledge gaps, especially in other language versions of Wikipedia. This workshop will introduce you to the world of Wiki editing and translating through the prism of Wikipedia poetry pages. We will support you to register as a Wiki editor. We will then work together to plug the knowledge gaps, discussing translation questions and challenges raised by these gaps along the way (e.g. Should we translate a poet’s name? A poem’s title? What notable poets are missing?) By the end of the session, you will have made your first foray’s into the Wikimedia community; you are most welcome! This workshop is open to University of St Andrews staff, students, as well as members of the public. The ability to read and write in other languages, in addition to English, is desirable, but not essential. Laptops or tablet devices with keyboards will be required for the session.
